A Guide for Beginners
I’ll be the first to admit- I don’t know everything about blogging. In fact, I have a lot more to learn (a lot is an understatement). As a beginner blogger myself, I know the struggles of not knowing where to begin. It’s hard to decide where to start when you finally decide to take the plunge and start a blog so I will guide you in the basic steps. All of the guides to starting a blog are by more intermediate to advanced bloggers, so sometimes they can still be a bit confusing. I broke making a blog down into a few simple steps so that anyone can follow!
Determine Your Purpose
Before you actually start your blog, you need to decide your purpose. Are you doing this as a hobby or maybe to keep your family updated on your life OR are doing this because you want the opportunity to monetize your blog and start something that could potentially be successful?
Once you’ve decide your purpose, you’ll know which blogging platform is going to best suit your needs.
When I started blogging a few years, it was mainly just a diary to get my thoughts out there. I started on blogger which is great for beginners and someone who is blogging as a hobby. Another great platform to use for hobby blogging is wordpress.com.
If you are looking to monetize your blog, I would highly recommend straying away from blogger and wordpress.com because of all of the restrictions they have when it comes to making a profit. WordPress.org is going to be your best bet if you eventually plan to make your blog into your business. Remember that there is a big difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org so make sure that you go to the correct platform.
Okay, so you’ve decided you want to take this whole blogging thing seriously. What’s next?
Get Web Hosting
You will need to get set up with a self-hosted blog host. I highly recommend using Site Ground. They have great web hosting starting at $3.95/month. Web hosting can be confusing, but their 24/7 customer support makes the process a lot easier. Every time I’ve had any issues, they have gotten back to me within minutes which is a huge weight off of your shoulders when you’re excited to get things set up! I am also extremely satisfied with the speed and safety that they ensure for your website.
Choose a Domain
After you’ve set up your blog host, you will you have to decide what you want your domain name to be. Your domain name is going to be the name of your website (ex: (mostlymariah.com) so make sure you choose wisely. Don’t choose a domain name that you are going to hate a few years down the road because it is a hassle to have that domain changed.
Connect Your Blog
Now that your domain is set up, you’ll want to connect your wordpress.org blog with your web host. Please remember that wordpress.org is the correct site you want to be using in this case; not wordpress.com. Site Ground will walk you through the process as you are setting up your hosting with them.
You can now officially start building your blog! This is where the fun begins 🙂
- Decide your niche: What are you passionate about? Do you have an area of expertise?
- Pick your theme: Choosing the theme for your blog is one of the most fun parts about the process, but also one of the most important. You want to choose a theme that best suits you. In my opinion, start simple. Choose a theme that looks clean and organized. You don’t want a dark theme or anything cluttered; it will turn away a lot of potential readers.
- There are a lot of free simple themes to choose from. Until you are an experience blogger and know the nicks and crannies of your blog, I would personally stay away from the themes you have to purchase.
- Start writing! You are now officially a blogger!
